Program Overview

The Electrical Engineering Degree Programmes aim to produce graduates who have: 

  • sound fundamental knowledge in the broad spectrum of Electrical Engineering and underlying Sciences;
  • a strong problem-solving ability;
  • an understanding and appreciation of financial, economic, sociological and environmental issues relating to the function of Professional Electrical Engineers;
  • Developed a professional approach to their work and conduct.

Graduates having this combination of sound fundamentals, problem-solving ability and appreciation of the impact of engineering decisions can succeed in a wide variety of career paths, and are sought out by potential employers. Wits Electrical Engineering graduates will be found in senior technical and managerial positions in South Africa and abroad.

Over the past 60 years, the School has been educating the country's leading graduate Electrical Engineers. Over this period the content of the degree programme has constantly changed to reflect the many exciting developments that have occurred in Electrical Engineering. As we enter the new millennium digital computers, software and data networks are playing a major role in areas of concern in Electrical Engineering. All students entering the School take courses that have a high Computing and Information Technology (IT) content. This is true for both the Electrical Engineering degree, and the Information Engineering Option referred to below.

Wits Electrical Engineering students are taught by dedicated and well-qualified academic staff, many of whom are national and international experts in their fields. The School has well equipped teaching laboratories and computer facilities. From first year onwards, all students have their own e-mail address and access to the Internet. The School has a strong research culture and encourages interaction between undergraduate and post-graduate students.


Undergraduate Programs


Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical)

  • This is a 4 year program, the final year considered as honours level. 
  • It contains a broad mix of courses that cover diverse aspects such as electric circuits, software, microprcessors, power engineering, electronics, electromagnetics, etc.
  • Its referred to as the EE stream.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) - Information Engineering Option

  • This is a 4 year program, the final year considered as honours level. 
  • It contains a broad mix of courses that cover diverse aspects such as electric circuits, software, microprcessors, telecommunications, electronics, electromagnetics, etc.
  • Its referred to as the IE stream.

Bachelor of Engineering Science (Biomedical) - 3 year program

  • This is a 3 year program.
  • It combines subjects in science, engineering, medicine and biology, as well as specific biomedical engineering units.
  • The programme does not itself form the basis of a professional qualification, but rather is intended to be followed by one of three professional qualifications. These are: Medicine (MB BCh), BSc(Eng) in Electrical Engineering (or the Information option) or a BSc(Hons) in Physics.

Postgraduate Programs

Master of Science in Engineering – MSc(Eng) by research only 

  • A candidate is expected to carry out advanced study and research under the direction of an appointed supervisor. After consultation with the supervisor and with his/her consent, a candidate will be expected to submit for examination a dissertation based on his/her research.
  • This is suited to this interested in research.

Master of Science in Engineering – MSc(Eng) by advanced coursework and a project

  • An approved curriculum will comprise a programme of courses consisting of 20 credit point core and elective courses totalling not less than 120, and a research project with a value of 120 credit points, making a total of 240 credit points. The project, which will be carried out under an appointed supervisor, should be equivalent to six months of full-time study. On completion of the project, a candidate must after consultation with, and with the consent of the supervisor, submit a report on the project for examination.
  • This is suited to this interested in research and skills development in a particular field.

Master of Engineering – M(Eng) by advanced coursework only

  • A programme of advanced coursework over a period of not less than one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.
  • This is suited to this interested in skills development in a particular field, and is frequently chosen by industry professionals looking to build on their knowledge.

Doctor of Philosophy – PhD

  • At the close of the period of research and after consultation with the appointed supervisor, a candidate will be expected to submit, with the supervisor’s approval, a thesis for examination.
  • The thesis must constitute a substantial contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the subject chosen and must be satisfactory as regards literary style and presentation.
  • The minimum period of registration for the degree of PhD is two years of full-time study.

Accreditations and standing of the degree

The Wits Electrical Engineering (EE) and Electrical Engineering with Information Engineering Option (IE) degrees enjoys accreditation and recognition both locally and internationally as follows:
  • is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Accreditation by ECSA means that graduates are recognised as meeting the educational requirements toward becoming registered as a Professional Engineer ( PrEng ).
  • The accreditation of the programme by ECSA,   provides recognition for our graduates from 1999 onwards  in countries that have signed the Washington Accord, these include: Australia ; Canada ; Hong Kong , China ; Ireland ; New Zealand ; United Kingdom ; and United States of America.
  • The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) London , indicating the international standing of the degree.

Admission to the Programs

The entrance requirements for both degree options are the same.Students elect to proceed either in the general Electrical Engineering degree or in the Information Engineering option, at the end of their second year.
Due to the limited number of places available meeting the likely acceptance level does not guarantee admission.
